My quick rating - 5.4/10. I am in no way going to say that this is a good movie, but it had a weird charm to it. First, Bruce Willis has a role where he doesn't have to do much, nor rely on remembering a slew of lines. He just plays a convict that happens to be one of the most feared superhumans and is kept in solitary confinement. In this flick, which has an interesting premise to it, the point is Michael Rooker runs a maximum-security prison that holds all the mutated humans that have developed superpowers after a global incident called the pulse. They try to briefly explain the whole thing off but it really just flies into the action asap. The budget definitely shows through, especially in the lack of set as far as the prison itself goes. Never mind the special effects, they are purposely hokey fun to occasionally show off the powers. There was just so much potential in this flick to be a cult-type classic that got wasted. Dan Payne plays a muscle-bound character named Payback who wants to give just that to anyone who breaks the law and stands out among the inmates. Along with Tom Cavanagh, whom I have been a fan of ever since The Flash. The cast actually overall, is pretty well done to convey their quirky behaviors. The one thing that bothered me about this flick was that the main character we are meant to follow, played by Brennan Mejia is strangely underexplained and thrown into plotlines that are just dead ends. But minus that, the story as a whole did actually deliver with a fun twist of an ending that, in this flick, worked out perfectly. By the time you get to it, you have grown accustomed to taking things with a grain of salt, and you won't mind the absurdity of anything. I am sure you are well aware of my bias toward Willis, and in light of what we have found out since my last review, I would understand if you think I am bumping this way up, but in all honesty, I am not. This one just delivered a unique idea that, given a lot more care, could've really been a winner. As it sits, it is fully entertaining enough to check out for a bit of sci-fi fun. Color me pleasantly surprised. New info, I had no idea this was also a graphic novel from 2008.
