This is a genuinely great story about friendship across the ages, and one that hits harder the older you get. It also quietly showcases just how much range Bette Midler has when you line this up against the rest of her filmography — warmth, humour, vulnerability, and real emotional weight all living in the same performance. One of my favourite songs lives in this film, and I didn’t even realise this was where it came from until I finally watched it in my twenties. That moment alone added an unexpected layer to the experience, like discovering a memory you didn’t know you’d been carrying around. Having friendships that stretch back to my earliest days, and still being in contact with those people now, a lot of this resonated deeply. The way the film handles time passing — drifting apart, coming back together, changing without breaking — feels honest in a way that sneaks up on you. I’ve watched this more than once, and it holds up every time. It knows exactly what it’s doing emotionally and doesn’t apologise for it. If you’re looking for a good, proper sad movie — the kind that earns its tears and stays rewatchable — this is an easy recommendation. 🍷 A quiet glass of red late at night — reflective, emotional, and best enjoyed when you’re ready to sit with it for a while.
