This is not Mattel’s movie; it is writer-director Greta Gerwig’s expression through and through. Barbie is connecting with so many people because Gerwig has attached a well-known property to the best hallmarks of her style: honesty, sensitivity, and self-discovery. I am excited to see the next story she tells in the movie theater.

I don’t think this is a bad movie at all, but the sheer number of people treating it like Shakespeare is genuinely bewildering. It’s clever in places, stylish almost everywhere, but it’s not the razor-sharp masterpiece some made it out to be. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling both do excellent work. Robbie threads the needle between icon and character, while Gosling fully commits to Ken in a way that’s self-aware, ridiculous, and often the funniest thing in the film. Their performances are easily the strongest element, and whenever the movie leans into character rather than thesis, it works best. Where it fell down for me was the logic of the world-building. If the executives already know about Barbieland, then Barbie arriving in the real world shouldn’t really be a shock — and that disconnect kept pulling me out of the story. The film wants surprise and discovery, but it undermines itself by quietly admitting the grown-ups already know how the trick works. There are genuinely funny moments. Barbie discovering that drinks actually exist inside cups is a great bit of physical comedy, and there are flashes of wit scattered throughout. Visually, the neon-soaked world is a full sensory assault — it blasted me straight back to the ’90s in the best possible way… though I’m not convinced my retinas have fully forgiven it yet. Entertaining, well-performed, occasionally sharp, but far messier and less profound than its loudest fans would have you believe. 🍹 A neon cocktail with far too much garnish — bright, sweet, and fun at first sip, but not something you’d want all night.
