Enjoyed the sound package in the film, but the actors are dry and annoying. The plot is all over the place and when they do start to tell you wtf is going on, it still doesn't help. Another failed attempt to convert a game into a movie.

So much potential. Went to such an extreme to turn it into a drama about one man's psychological issues, we all lost you on the plot. We noted your obvious sequel expectation. Could have spent less time on the drama, and more on plot.

What began as an anonymous creepypasta on 4chan has now evolved into a full blown feature film with A24’s unsettling adaptation of The Backrooms. Directed by series creator Kane Parsons, the film expands his viral web mythology into a suffocating psychological horror experience that feels less like a traditional movie and more like a waking fever dream you can’t escape. For the uninitiated, The Backrooms is essentially that recurring nightmare where the hallway keeps stretching farther away no matter how fast you walk, blended with the sterile emptiness of abandoned office spaces humming under fluorescent lights. Random junk litters endless yellow corridors, reality folds in on itself, and there’s seemingly no exit. Chiwetel Ejiofor delivers a quietly devastating performance as Clark, a man already trapped in the soul-crushing monotony of his own life before stumbling through a multidimensional doorway into the ominous labyrinth known as the Backrooms. Saying much more would spoil the film’s carefully layered mysteries. Renate Reinsve is equally compelling as Mary, Clark’s therapist, whose own fractured emotional state may be more connected to the Backrooms than the film initially lets on. Rather than relying on cheap jump scares, Parsons leans heavily into atmosphere, existential dread, and the terror of isolation. The result is hypnotic, unnerving, and deeply ambiguous. Its open-ended finale is certain to spark endless debate, especially among longtime fans of the mythos. Some horror audiences may find its slow-burn psychological approach frustrating, particularly those expecting a more conventional scare fest. But for viewers willing to surrender to its strange rhythms and oppressive mood, The Backrooms is one of the most haunting and uniquely unsettling horror films A24 has released in a while.

    THE BEST EVERRR

It was pretty good. Some very creepy stuff and concepts. Some game & lore Easter eggs, overall solid but It's got some issues. It did its job well enough to where I want more for sure. For 20 year olds directing debut, this was shot and filmed so well. They made sure that 10 million budget was put to good use. Looking forward to more from young Kane Parsons! My issues 1. Wish it had more found footage sequences or even the whole movie. The best parts were those we did have. 2. The monster was... an interesting decision... meh. 3. Felt like I was missing an Act between acts 2 & 3. Needed some more in between those & I think you'll agree once you watch it. 3. They gave us way too many answers. (Kind of)

I would keep Backrooms in the library less as a conventional horror story and more as a mood-piece with teeth. It is the sort of film that works best when the room is dark, the sound is decent, and nobody in the house is about to interrupt with a question about where the spare charger went. My attachment to it comes partly from having watched Kane Parsons’ YouTube shorts before the feature. The original appeal was that lo-fi, analog found-footage feeling: the terror of a camera seeing something it could not explain. The film does not simply repeat that. It upgrades the image and widens the story, which changes the texture of the fear. The cleaner look makes the Backrooms feel less like corrupted footage and more like corrupted architecture. The best reason to revisit it is the design. The rooms are wonderfully wrong: too familiar to dismiss, too irrational to map, somewhere between dead mall, furniture showroom, office corridor, and dream space. Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve give the film enough human weight to stop it becoming just an art installation with jump scares, and Mark Duplass adds a useful late-stage layer of institutional unease. The weakness is that the film’s emotional argument remains a bit foggy. Clark’s collapse, Mary’s trauma, the Still Life copies, and Async’s theories about memory all point in the same direction, but the film does not entirely connect them with the force I wanted. It suggests more than it resolves. Rewatch value is strong for atmosphere, design, sound, and the way it changes ordinary spaces afterwards. Less strong if I am in the mood for a tightly satisfying narrative. Worth keeping, but not because it answers everything. More because it leaves the hallway humming.

Without a doubt, one of the best movies I have ever watched. It is not the typical horror film filled with cheap jump scares; instead, it pulls you in with its unsettling atmosphere and keeps you thinking about what is really happening. The feeling of being lost, the psychological tension, and the mystery throughout the story stay with you long after the movie ends. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys films that make you think and keep you engaged from beginning to end. It is a unique, intense, and incredibly well-made experience. For me, it is a 10/10.

I saw it in a movie theater the start was amazing but as we made our way through the rest it didn’t make much sense at all.
