- jackmeat2 novembre 2024My quick rating - 5.5/10. In this flick, Samara Weaving stars as a woman trapped in a world where silence is law, and her path is one of survival and sacrifice. The story follows Azrael as she flees a cult-like society, only to be hunted down and recaptured for a ritual meant to satisfy an ancient evil in the depths of the forest. In a world where speech is forbidden, the lack of dialogue surprisingly works here, enhancing the film’s haunting atmosphere and putting focus on visual storytelling. The film has its strengths, especially in portraying brutality and raw violence when the situation calls for it, illustrating the forest creatures’ savage nature and the dangerous world Azrael must navigate. Weaving takes on the role of a fierce and resilient character, embodying the ‘badass’ protagonist with conviction, although the role limits her range. Despite the intrigue of its premise, the storyline feels stretched, more suited for a short than a full-length movie, with some repetitive moments that dampen the pacing. Overall, it is atmospheric and visually driven, but it could have benefited from a bit more depth or narrative twists. It's a watchable experience for those interested in silent, minimalist horror, but it might leave you wanting a bit more substance.

In case you're not up on Evangelical Christian mythology, the Rapture is when the faithful are taken to heaven, leaving everyone else behind. So, the film, set in a post-Rapture world where speech is treated as a sin, unfolds almost entirely in silence. That choice gives it a distinctive tone, but it also makes the experience more abstract and occasionally anti-natural. Viewers who need narrative clarity may find themselves repulsed by the lack of dialogue. As a piece of low-budget filmmaking, though, it's not bad. The camera work is genuinely strong, with several sequences built around movement, framing, and geography. The cinematographer and director clearly worked together to create tension visually, and when it works, it works very well. It feels controlled and purposeful rather than constrained by budget. The monsters are particularly effective. I mentally called them the "fallen", because it seemed like they were once humans who'd been punished (burned) beyond not being selected to ascend. Or perhaps they were hellspawn. Regardless, they actually scared the pants off me and gave me nightmares, they're genuinely terrifying, and the practical effects used when they attack or feed are grotesque and extremely realistic. The film avoids glossy CGI in favour of textured practical effects, which makes the horror land harder. Samara Weaving and the rest of the cast deserve credit. Performing without dialogue is demanding, and the film relies entirely on physical acting, eye lines, and reaction. The performances carry the emotional continuity even when the narrative becomes murky. Nothing feels lazy, here, everyone did their jobs. The score is serviceable but clearly operating within indie constraints. It supports tension without standing out, and rarely adds meaning beyond atmosphere. Where the film struggles is accessibility. The conceptual approach is admirable, but a hint of exposition would have grounded the world without undermining the tone. As it stands, the mythology and motivations are often unclear, and viewers are left assembling meaning from fragments. That ambiguity will appeal to some, but it also risks disengagement. I have my own coherent reading of the film, but other viewers may have completely different and equally valid interpretations. Still, as a stripped-down, atmospheric horror movie, it's solid. Unusual, visually confident, occasionally confusing, but effective when it leans into mood and physical threat. I'm happy to discuss interpretations of the plot and what is actually happening in a thread, but that quickly moves into spoiler territory, so I'll not include details here.
- DJ17 ottobre 2024What a physically exhausting movie. Seriously. This is 86 minutes of constant attacks. To pull this off is one thing but to do it with no script makes it even more impressive. The violence is pretty aggressive as well when it comes into play. The adrenaline rush kind of reminded me of the first time I watched The Raid, but mixed with The Descent. Samara Weaving as usual is great. A great watch!
- Rick29 maggio 2025I’m usually fine with just getting dumped in a world and going along for the ride, but I really think this film could have used a bit more world building. We are left wondering if the entire world is this fucked up, or if we just ended up in the camp of religious weirdos. The action scenes were really well done. Not over edited and everything felt like it had weight to it. I really like the post truck scene fight. I hope no one tells that poor baby how its mom reacted when she saw how ugly it was. That would not be good for your self esteem.

- Kevin Ward1 luglio 2025100% my sh🤩. Dark and mean, relentless, biblical post-apocalyptic thriller. A bloody good time. Samara Weaving is even more feral and expressive than ever in a role with zero dialogue. The entire film here has almost no dialogue, which can be a trick to pull off, but the propulsive action never really lets up enough to make it an issue. There’s some truly unsettling horrors, some claustrophobic underground chills that reminded me of The Descent, and a truly diabolical ending and parting shot. Not sure I understand all of it, particularly some of the antagonists or their motivations. But I also didn’t really care about that.

- rg94001 novembre 2024Samara Weaving covered in blood is one of my favorite genres, but unfortunately, this movie is one of the weaker entries in that niche. The whole movie revolves around the gimmick that no one speaks (outside of one minor character). This might be interesting conceptually, but it is incredibly dull in practice. It makes it hard to fully understand why anything is even happening. Outside of the main character's simple motivation of survival, it's not really clear what motivates the cult chasing her or why they do what they do. It also prevents any sort of character depth. There are forlorn glances between some characters, but as characters die, there isn't any significance because we know absolutely nothing about any of the characters. Sure, it lets Samara Weaving's acting and facial expressions shine, but the movie could have done that without sacrificing in terms of everything else. The biggest problem is that this movie is simply not interesting visually to make up for these shortcomings. I could maybe excuse it if it just was a fun time with plenty of cool cinematography and excellent survival sequences. Unfortunately, it is often too dark, the action feels mundane, and while the kills can be gory, they do not feel exhilarating or creative. In the end, I think this movie became too absorbed with its own gimmick and forgot to work on everything else.
