- Attack the Block: Obnoxious Kids, Cheap Politics, and a Film That Thinks You’re Stupid Attack the Block had a concept that could have been fun: aliens drop into a South London housing estate on fireworks night, and a group of local kids have to fight them off. That setup is simple, pulpy, and potentially entertaining. What the film actually delivers is two hours of glorifying street criminals, treating the audience like it has a very small IQ, and wrapping the whole thing in a mean, one-note sermon about how the police are the problem and white people are the problem. The protagonists are not charming antiheroes. They are some of the most obnoxious, grating characters I have ever been asked to root for. They mug a woman in the opening minutes, swagger around like they own the block, talk in a constant stream of aggressive slang and insults, and the movie insists we should find this endearing. These are not good people who happen to be rough around the edges. They are annoying people, and the film never stops congratulating itself for making them the heroes. Every time they do something thuggish, the camera and the script treat it as proof of authenticity rather than a reason to dislike them. The social messaging is equally blunt and unpleasant. Police are portrayed as useless, hostile, or both. White characters exist mainly to be robbed, lectured, or shown as out of touch. The film has a strong, persistent emphasis on the idea that authority is the real enemy and that the kids’ criminal behaviour is just a natural response to a stacked deck. That is not nuance. It is a lecture. Calling this one of the most racially loaded mainstream films I have seen is not an exaggeration; it keeps scoring cheap points by sorting people into the “correct” and “incorrect” groups and then daring you to object. It could have been a lively creature feature with some street-level energy. Instead it is obnoxious, stupid, and mean-spirited. It mistakes shouting, attitude, and anti-authority posturing for personality, and it assumes the only people who will enjoy it are those who already agree that criminals should be the good guys and everyone else should shut up. A better film would have let the aliens be the villains and the kids be complicated. This one just wants you to cheer the muggers and feel enlightened for doing it.
- I love how scrappy this movie feels. It takes a pretty simple idea and squeezes every bit of fun out of it without ever feeling bloated. The energy is great, the humor lands, and the cast does a fantastic job of making the whole thing feel grounded even when everything gets completely ridiculous. It's one of those movies that knows exactly how long it should be and never overstays its welcome. A few of the characters take a little time to warm up to, and the budget limitations show here and there. Honestly though, that rough-around-the-edges quality is part of the charm. The movie has way more personality than a lot of bigger sci-fi action films, and it's impossible not to appreciate how much it accomplishes with relatively little. Funny, tense, and just plain cool.
- Went out on a Saturday night and come back with more change than this movie had in a budget, script was amateurish, acting was over the top trying to be street, Jodie Whittaker as annoying as she was in Dr.Who, John Boyega brought very little to his character, as much as he did in Star Wars and Nick Frost, who I can't stand in anything he does turned up for a pay cheque, he is just a greasy same character sidekick to Simon Pegg's talent. Overall I was cheering for the aliens, so yeh, don't expect much and movie for a low TV night.
