Il cadetto Stanley Coppersmith, continuamente vessato da compagni e superiori, desidera la vendetta. Un giorno, mandato per punizione a pulire la cripta della piccola chiesa dell'accademia militare di West Andover, scopre una stanza segreta nella quale sono riposti antichi volumi in latino. Decide di prenderli e tradurli con l'aiuto del suo computer. Scoprirà presto di aver rinvenuto libri di magia nera ed il giovane cadetto cercherà di usarli a proprio vantaggio.
