- Alex | Pop Culture Brain19 février 2025Pixar’s first original TV show just premiered on Disney+ Is it a home run or a strike out? I watched the first two episodes of Pixar’s Win or Lose, so here’s the good and the bad without spoilers. Briefly, Win or Lose is an 8 episode story about a kids softball team, where each episode is told from a different character’s perspective. And it’s pretty damn great, proving that Pixar remains as creative as ever. The first thing that stood out to me was the series’ super clever storytelling. That’s way more fantastical and surreal than I was expecting. Win or Lose didn’t appear on the surface to have a fantastical concept, like a boy who’s really a merman or talking emotions inside your head, so I was delightfully surprised to see writer-directors Carrie Hobson and Michael Yates infuse this show what that Pixar magic. In fact, the tone of the show reminded me a bit of Scrubs or Community - but animated, complete with a deep layer of sadness underneath. Also, the visual style is really cool - it’s cartoony and stylized, like Luca, but the artists have applied some film grain and dynamic lighting to the image, which gives the series this nostalgic realism and extra drama respectively. Also the vocal performances through the first two episodes are great, especially from Will Forte and Jo Firestone. On the flip side, the intentionally disjointed storytelling might leave you feeling like your missing stuff. Like somehow the story is incomplete, but I have faith that will pay off as the show goes on. Also the show is going for big comedy - I found it humorous, but not laugh out loud funny. Anyway, this is one of the most unique and interesting projects Pixar has made in years . Once again blending approachable and well defined characters with mature emotional ideas and of course, a dash of the surreal.
