L'histoire débute dans le village de Pasroe, au moment du festival de la moisson. Contrairement à la plupart des habitants du pays où se déroule l'histoire, les habitants de Pasroe sont païens et croient en une divinité-loup : Holo. La légende raconte qu'un pacte entre les hommes et les loups a été conclu afin d'assurer de bonnes récoltes de blé. Mais les villageois ne prennent plus la légende au sérieux : c'est grâce à des méthodes plus modernes que les récoltes sont devenues plus abondantes.
