The story goes back to the so-called “Noite Sangrenta” of October 19, 1921, in which some of the heroes of 1910, such as Machado dos Santos and Carlos da Maia, were murdered by a militia of sailors and republican guards following a political coup -military and another change of government. Berta da Maia, Carlos' widow, decides to investigate and confront Abel Olímpio, the militia chief meanwhile tried and imprisoned in the Coimbra penitentiary.
