De retour à Kiel, après un séjour forcé à Lisbonne où il a retrouvé son père, Klaus Hoffmann se voit confier le commandement d'un U-Boot en vue d'une mission secrète en Italie. La guerre sous-marine s'intensifie en Méditerranée, tandis qu'un climat d'intrigues se propage à Berlin où la résistance aux nazis augmente, y compris dans les rangs même de la Kriegsmarine.
