In between are the victims with no control over their fate, treated as property rather than human beings. That part is hard to watch, true to the time, but still uncomfortable. What works is the slow, deliberate pacing, strong character development, and beautiful scenery. By the end, even the possibility of the bad men catching up carries real tension.
