- BoysLoveUnrated16 septembre 2025Black Butler is a goth-historic fantasy world with major BL vibes and I love everything about it. The characters, atmosphere, style, plotlines, soundtrack, voices - it's all mixed together perfectly, like a drink with many different ingredients and tastes that all compliment each other. And the animation, especially in the last 2 seasons, - exquisite. One of the best I've seen so far in the world of anime. The perfect binge-worthy treat for Halloween. Also, Sebastian is getting hotter with each season... 🥵 The focus of the story and the most entertaining part for me is the relationship between Ciel and Sebastian. It's not romantic but it's very intimate and unique. They're both enslaved to each other and very co-dependent. Ciel is playing a role of a proud and aristocratic master although he's just a 13-year-old boy who has just lost his parents. And Sebastian is a powerful demon posing as a butler whose real goal is to take Ciel's soul once the contract between them is complete. It's all about the complexity of their relationship. The anime is delivered in a fun, cute and sarcastic tone but it's actually pretty dark, multi-layered and needs a few trigger warnings ⚠️. Abuse, cults, kidnappings, murders, implied SA of children, human trafficking and many more themes that might not be acceptable to some viewers. Ciel's backstory is being told bit by bit throughout seasons and it only gets worse and worse. On top of that, there's the infamous season 2 of Black Butler which wasn't based on the manga and which is the most triggering and questionable. Many skip that season and for a good reason. The plot isn't exactly plotting but the major issue for me personally, is that there's an ugly undertone of victim blaming. They turn an abused child (!) into a villain (not Ciel btw). I hated that part the most. It was obvious it wasn't written by the same person. And most likely, not a woman as well (the original manga is created by Yana Toboso - a female author). It's like the perspective has changed from the abused to the abuser's gaze. So yeah, beware of season 2. 😅
