- Niztradamus-3 jIan Tuason’s Undertone is a masterclass in technical tension that ultimately collapses under the weight of its own pacing. While it offers a visceral "pregnancy horror" experience that will undoubtedly rattle its target demographic, for those outside that specific emotional orbit, the film struggles to justify its runtime. The Technical Highs The sound design is the film’s strongest asset. Undertone’s auditory landscape is meticulously crafted, creating an oppressive atmosphere that does the heavy lifting where the script falters. Tuason clearly understands how to use sonic space to build dread, proving he has the technical chops to compete in the genre. The Structural Lows However, the narrative momentum is nearly nonexistent. The film adopts a "slow-burn" approach but fails to provide the necessary friction to keep the audience engaged. A particularly egregious choice was the inclusion of a guided meditation sequence; in a film already battling a lethargic tempo, this felt less like a stylistic choice and more like a lullaby for the audience. The Payoff Problem The most significant failure lies in the resolution—or lack thereof. After enduring an agonizingly deliberate buildup, the film cuts to black just as it reaches the narrative "showdown." While ambiguity can be a powerful tool, here it feels like a withdrawal of the promised payoff. You are left to infer the climax rather than witness it, which, after such a slow trek, feels less like "high art" and more like an abrupt exit. Final Verdict Tuason has the vision and the technical toolkit, but the storytelling needs more time in the oven. Undertone proves that "slow" only works if the destination is worth the journey. In this case, the destination was a dead end.

- Doc Worm15 mars 2026A haunted podcast? 🙄 This story just didn’t work for me. I wasn’t satisfied with where it ended up and that wouldn’t be so frustrating if it wasn’t such a slow burn. I was bought in for the most part as Undertone effectively conveys a sense of tension while moving through its plot. From a technical aspect the movie does so much with so little. Nina Kiri has a committed performance, the lighting is solid and the sound design is PHENOMENAL. If you do watch this one make sure you are doing so in a way that you can appreciate it’s Dolby atmos mix as this aspect of the film is truly special. With all the kudos I can give Undertone it made it that much more frustrating that I couldn’t get behind the tale it was trying to tell.

- Jacob O’Neal-6 hI’ve watched this movie twice now. I’m not gonna talk specifics of the plot, as it needs to be watched without knowing much. I’m gonna talk about theme. The film deals with loss (relationship, parents and more), familial burdens, loneliness, isolation and fear. There are really on two people physically in the film, no exterior shots. It’s a claustrophobic horror film that uses sound more than anything else. Everyone else in the film are disembodied voices heard through the podcast our main character is recording. What is really striking about this film is that it doesn’t spell everything out about the characters. You don’t get a scene letting you know about her more than the perfunctory greeting between her and her podcast co-host. Everything else is context clues and visuals. There is little to no music score throughout. This gives you a sense of unease given that music is one of the biggest emotional manipulators in film. It is the thing that can turn a funny moment scary, for example. Without it, we don’t know how we are supposed to feel and we get uncomfortable. The camera work is a lot of oners and deliberate movements. Ian Tuason, the writer/director, did a great job in crafting a smart and moody little horror film. Nina Kiri had a lot on her shoulders by not really having anyone else to act against for 99% of the film besides voices. I highly recommend this film to those who enjoy slow burn psychological horror.
- Corey Burkes-4 jLord Almighty, I never thought I’d see such a slow burn horror movie. I know it is trying to do and I totally get how audio can be a sensation, but long minutes on one character just to listen to audio is not the way to go. This film starts off well and it’s great if you want something playing in the background since the audio does its job that way, but looking at this movie will make you sleepy. It’s incredibly dull. And I think the core problem is it’s trying to make a feature-length out of something that could’ve been just done well as a short and left as a short. One last thought: it’s films like this that justify my appreciation for streaming versus going to the theater. If I went to the movies and paid upwards of $50 plus including concession, I would be pissed.

- Oʂɯαʅԃσ Rσყҽƚƚ20 mars 2026Bit of a slow burn and may not be for everyone if you want constant action or thrills, but is a great psychological thriller that I found to be gripping all the way through. Great performance from Nina Kiri and the sound design is really impressive and sets the tone perfectly.
- Spanktacular-6 hNice and creepy, dark subject matter, but could have done a bit more with it. Style points for the sound design. Definitely watch in 5.1 or with good headphones. Yvan Eht Nioj.

- SirMonkalot-7 hWhat a creepy movie, it made me feel so tense! I found it really well done and the cinematography was great, there were so many times that the camera work made me feel uneasy. It did a great job at making you feel like something scary could happen at any time.
