14 Octobre 1962.

Solid historical drama when the world was close to World War 3. Shows how the Kennedy WH responded to the USSR placing nuclear warheads 90 miles from the USA. The movie’s taut, flat style is appropriate for a story that is more about facts and speculation than about action. Kennedy and his advisers study high-altitude photos and intelligence reports, and wonder if Khrushchev’s word can be trusted. Everything depends on what they decide. The movie shows men in unknotted ties and shirt-sleeves, grasping coffee cups or whiskey glasses and trying to sound rational while they are at some level terrified. What the Kennedy team realizes, and hopes the other side realizes, is that the real danger is that someone will strike first out of fear of striking second.

An interesting and thought proving movie based on true events gives some insight into the Cold War with the script was based on the book The Kennedy Tapes: Inside the White House During the Cuban Missile Crisis by Ernest R. May and Philip D. Zelikow, as well as the memoirs of presidential aide Kenneth O'Donnell. There are some strong performances Costner being one (although not his attempt at a Boston accent). Wasn't sure as to the creative reasoning behind the jumping from colour to b&w from time to time, I did some research and it is suggested it is as an artistic choice to evoke the aesthetic of famous Life magazine photographs from the 1960s.The visual shifts serve a few purposes:"Camelot" Aura: The black-and-white shots are specifically meant to capture the nostalgic, historic mood of the Kennedy administration.Factual Emphasis: The audio commentary for the film notes that scenes shown in black-and-white are often intended to represent events that are historically documented and verified, rather than the fictionalised or speculative dramatic beats. I do wonder how many other times we have come close to similar scenarios as I'm sure this isn't the only time.

It's a pretty good movie except Kenny O'Donnell had no influence over the NSC during the Cuban missile crisis.

Some great performances. At times it plays a little fast and loose with history (Robert MacNamara said of Costner's character "For God's sakes, Kenny O'Donnell didn't have any role whatsoever in the missile crisis; he was a political appointment secretary to the President; that's absurd" for example). That said, it's entertaining, intense and gives some idea of the time. A good watch.
