The Granddad of all addictions movies ever made. Milland was superb. After the cheesy stage/over dramatic acting which was norm up to early 50's Wilder hits addiction to a T. Hiding substance, lies, freaking out over not able to get a fix, the DT's. Who talked about DT's in 1945. My great uncle quit drinking because of this. He started seeing himself he said. No "Days of Wine & Roses", "Leaving Las Vegas", or "Requiem for a Dream." Last one is a dead hit but that was 55 years later.

I give this movie a four out of five The Lost Weekend is a cautionary tail of alcoholism and the effect it has on those around us. Jane Wyman does a fantastic job as the girlfriend trying to save Ray Miland from himself. The director, Billy Wilder, has a unique talent for making it easy for us to care about the characters and does an especially good job of dragging us through the dark and murky side of alcoholism-without getting us too dirty. Ray Miland gives a fantastic performance and should have won an Oscar for his role. The movie drags down in a few spots, but picks right back up again just as you’re starting to lose interest. The dialogue is crisp and Wilder gets the delivery just right. Should also watch “The Days of Wine and Roses.”

This Billy Wilder written movie was no doubt groundbreaking in its time, and the actors work hard to sell the tale. But there's no denying it hasn't aged particularly well, seeming sometimes like an overwrought Afternoon School Special rather than the timeless classic its reputation suggests.
