Adam Rifkin, love him or hate him, has likely made something that anyone reading this may have enjoyed - The Last Movie Star, Chillerama, Detroit Rock City, wrote Small Soldiers, Mouse Hunt and The Chase (also directed that one). But I guarantee you’ve never seen a Rifkin film like this. Starring Judd Nelson, Bill Paxton, Lara Flynn Boyle, James Caan, Claudia Christian, Wayne Newton and even a pre-famous Billy Bob Thornton as an extra in a bar scene. Nelson plays a stand up comic who is terrible but gets to perform twice a week at a local club. Paxton is his duplicitous best friend. When a strange growth appears on Nelson’s back it continues to get bigger until he has a full blown third arm in the middle of his back. Now, despite his jokes and delivery not being any better, he’s now becoming a hot property with this gimmick. This movie is straight up weird. This is one of those types of low budget movies you look back on years later when to notice the cast and think “I’ll check it out” only to discover you’re entering something more akin to a Lynch/Cronenberg type world than anything in a John Hughes movie (since Nelson and Paxton both got their starts working for Hughes). This has a fun sense of dark humor and twisted performances. Wayne Newton was especially fun to watch as a sleazy talent manager. Lara Flynn Boyle wasn’t given much to do in the film, sadly. This is a flawed but very fun piece of cinema history. If you’re a fan of weird an quirky films, you just might find this in your rotation for years to come. And if anyone out there reads this and watches it, tell me if I’m crazy to thinking the music score’s main theme sounds eerily similar to 1997’s X-Men cartoon theme.

The Fly meets Neil Hamburger à la John Waters. The dark backwards is certainly a unique vision. There is no denying that. The plot and pacing are a bit muddled but that’s not the part worth recommending here. Its filthy gaudy world is populated by characters with questionable morals who are propelled by circus music and over the top performances. In particular the lead roles of Judd Nelson and Bill Paxton are a riot to watch.

I want to punch this film in the face.
