Are you too paranoid? Or not paranoid enough? Do you hear the faint hum of the electronic devices in your room? If you're not listening to the conversation, then who is?

“The Conversation” moves slowly, and if you’re not paying attention, it can feel like it’s dragging. It’s built around paranoia and context. You hear the same conversation, but you don’t really know what it means at first. As more information comes in, the meaning shifts, and that’s exactly what happens to the main character. Gene Hackman is strong here. He plays a closed-off, paranoid man who starts to question the consequences of his work. He makes his living from it, but as the outcome becomes clearer, it begins to weigh on him, and he tries to take control of something that’s already slipping. If you give it your attention and let it unfold, it delivers. If you don’t, it can feel slow and like it never quite gets there.

This film was interesting and I battled with the rating. At the end of the day it’s a classic everyone should experience. I was quite interested in the 70’s tech over everything else but Gene is great, felt it was a tad bit long but still a classic.

It's a good movie but not the kind that you will watch again. The ending is interesting. Makes viewers discuss whether it was a good or bad ending.

Whilst an interesting character analysis of the parallels of conversing and conversation, observation and observed, expert and novice, the story is incredibly thin. It’s difficult to imagine the film succeeding without Hackman, and even then, there are painfully long sequences, that are, dare I say it, boring. Perhaps it’s to give the feeling of the tedium of surveillance itself, but it’s a long, hard watch and listen.

Great movie but hearing the seem to Severance threw me off.

One of Gene Hackman's best, although sadly lesser-known films. From 1974, this intense examination of ethics in the use of technology resonates even more today.
