This is an incredibly frustrating film. There is something to be said about how effective Osgood Perkins is at establishing consistent tone and mood; something a lot of slow burns fall flat on. At the same time, being deliberately vague can only take you so far before it starts to take the weight out of the reveals that your film is built on. And it makes it even more frustrating when the entire cast is firing on all cylinders.

Not a conventional horror film, but a meticulously crafted psychological thriller reminiscent of The Witch and The Babadook (in tone). Kiernan Shipka anchors the cast with a magnetic, unsettling presence. Its slow, atmospheric storytelling rewards patience, with sound design and narrative ambiguity enhancing the chilling tone. Risky, divisive, but memorable.

I'm fairly shocked by the low scores for this movie. The imagery can be fantastic at times with very effective building of atmosphere. The acting from Emma Roberts and Kiernan Shipka in particular helps quite a bit. The plot isn't particularly obtuse either, with a straightforward approach that focuses much more on style and vibes than something more allegorical. I think the biggest drawback of the film is its structure where it jumps between perspectives and time at strange moments. In particular, it very clearly (and intentionally) seems to tip its hand halfway through the movie, but then seems to draw out the reveal until the end of the movie as if it is a surprise. I feel like something more linear would have served the movie much better. I also don't love the more nihilistic tone. Regardless, if you like very striking horror imagery with some excellent vibes, this movie is actually pretty good! Osgood Perkins has a lot of potential as a director. It's certainly a better watch than a cookie cutter generic horror movie, even if the score doesn't reflect that.

I've tried to watch this movie x3 times and still can't get past the 1/2 mark. It's drawn out, very slow and just missing any aspect of captivating the audience or doing anything creative or worth watching.

An incredible atmosphere. Possession, Satan, exorcism in an independent version – no Hollywood clichés. You could quibble about the ending, but it's a real gem.

    Very atmospheric

Well, this movie wasn't very good. It tried way too hard to be artsy and atmospheric, to the point where it was just silly. Also, I'm a big fan of slower movies, but this movie was just so filled with filler shots, and pretentious stuff that it simply became a bit boring at times. And of course, the acting was a bit "weird" and the movie made no effort in having rhyme or reason. But I suppose that's supposed to be artsy. I'd avoid this.
