- theicephoenix23 mai 2025Alright, so I finally rewatched the original Super Mario Bros. movie from 1993, and wow… this thing is completely unhinged in the best way. If you’ve never seen it, or haven’t watched it since you were a kid, just know this isn’t your typical video game movie. It’s more like someone saw a screenshot of the game once, took a shot of tequila, and said, "Yeah, I got this." Let’s get the obvious out of the way. This movie is nothing like the games. Instead of a bright, colorful Mushroom Kingdom, we get a grimy, post-apocalyptic Dinohattan where evolved dinosaurs live in a weird parallel universe. Dennis Hopper plays Koopa like a greasy, business-casual lizard man. The Goombas? They’ve got tiny heads and huge bodies, and honestly look like rejected creatures from a haunted Chuck E. Cheese. Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo play Mario and Luigi, and you can tell they’re trying their best, even though they clearly had no idea what was going on half the time. The behind-the-scenes drama is legendary. Constant rewrites, on-set tension, and the actors allegedly drinking just to survive the shoot. And somehow, all that chaos made it to the final product. It’s messy, it’s weird, and it’s kind of beautiful in a "what were they thinking" kind of way. But here’s the thing. For all its flaws, the movie is never boring. It’s got some seriously impressive practical effects, wild set design, and a totally unhinged energy that keeps you watching. It’s one of those "so bad it’s good" experiences that you can’t help but enjoy. You’re not watching this for a good story. You’re watching it to witness a full-blown 90s fever dream. I get why this movie has a cult following. It’s not a good Mario movie, but it’s such a strange, bold attempt at turning a video game into a serious sci-fi action film that you kind of have to respect it. It's weird, it's campy, it's chaotic, and honestly, it's a blast with the right crowd and the right mindset. Final thoughts: this movie is a mess, but it’s our mess. 10 out of 10 for chaos. 4 out of 10 as a Mario adaptation. Absolute cult classic material.
- Nathaniel “KingBear” Reifenheiser4 octobre 2025Alright, let me be clear about one thing: this movie is so bad that it’s good. I consider it a true cult classic. Every few years I throw it on and remember why I love John Leguizamo — and why I had a massive crush on Samantha Mathis as Princess Daisy. On my sliding scale, it lands a perfect 5/10, because it’s just a fun film to watch. Forget about judging it as a video game adaptation. Look at it instead as a wild, creative world where the cast went all-in. The actors commit so hard to their characters that the whole thing becomes strangely amazing. It’s messy, campy, and unforgettable — and that’s exactly why it endures.
- Kr8zyFox6 juillet 2025Blast from the past
- Zokkiie20 mars 2026This is pure chaos, in the best and worst ways. Nothing quite fits together, the tone flips constantly, and some of the performances are gloriously over the top. Watching it is like falling into a ’90s fever dream that refuses to make sense—but that’s exactly what makes it fun. It’s messy, ridiculous, and utterly unforgettable, a true cult classic that’s so bad it’s good.
- tomisto77 mars 2026PREMIUM BRANDED SLOP!!! A+++ (practical effects were actually very solid though!!)
- Ddoughnut21 mai 2025This is Mayo and Lagi, not Mario and Luigi
- Scorp1u518 janvier 2026Trust the fungus
- Baloo Uriza26 novembre 2025It definitely exists in its own universe seperate from the video game, but I think I like the movie better. Needs a sequel!
- Alex Keswick7 octobre 2025I'm glad this movie is finally seeing a turnaround on public opinion from people seemingly willing to examine it with eyes unclouded by its reputation (and who aren't Seth Rogen) because honestly? It whips! Yeah, make Mario Brazil! Give the set design to the Blade Runner guys, why not! I love how much care went into building its alternate world, as evidenced by so many little incidental details that aren't spelled out for you. Like, why are all the cars electric? Because the dinosaurs don't use fossil fuels, duh! Maybe it's easy to imagine a world where somehow in the 90s we got a more aesthetically faithful Super Mario adaptation; like, maybe they go full Dark Crystal with the set design which honestly ok would have probably been really sick. But I'm still happy this wacky, grimy, cyberfied take on the mushroom plumber game exists exactly how it does. If you haven't seen it in years, find a copy somewhere, sit down, crack a drink, and trust the fungus
- plexplex4143 décembre 2025I had fun watching it.
- Jacob12 octobre 2025I definitely have a soft spot for this movie, but I can’t argue that it’s the furthest thing from a faithful adaption of the Super Mario Brothers franchise. It has a bad script, albeit with some cool ideas. I appreciate this movie’s weird and dark reimagining of the video games because of how much creativity went into crafting the story and practical effects. Also, the posters, merch and trailers have propeller mushroom levels of aura. If nothing else, watch this movie for the laughably bad scenes and dialogue, because there’s plenty here. But, don’t take my word for it. Trust the fungus!
- nayasask123 septembre 2025Love Mari bros, it’s cool how they added all the power ups into technology like the boots that make them jump hi almost like in the game. LOVE IT. But the suits looked different, I like the actual suits. But they still have the colour right. Quality Is pretty great for an old movie if you agree, I mean look at it anyways, my favourite character is Mario in this film because, you know. HES MARIO. And plus he is the main character in all Mario games that include Mario is Mario so yeah. I don’t like how they made bowser, its weird so 4 stars 😀 sorry 😢
