- PhysicalMedia4Life-3 jWhen movie critics & fans talk about Stanley Kubrick films very rarely is 🗡 Spartacus brought up which is quite unbelievable tbh!! Stanley Kubrick's Spartacus was imo the first real epic of the sword & sandal sub-genre, as it has at the center of it; an inspirational story of one man that defied a roman empire and wanted to change and end slavery forever. Spartacus is so much more than, that it's a story also about love, renaissance, friendship, loyalty & tragedy all packed very powerfully & thematically into one story and Stanley Kubrick this early into his career showed that he could add so much layers & depth into his films. Spartacus was so ahead of its time, is it slightly dated in certain aspects now "YES" that's inevitable. Remember this film came out in 1960 and overall for a film that came out that many years ago, it still as a whole holds up very well. Also what I really appreciated about Spartacus on my latest rewatch on it, is that it's very good at making you feel that everything is all high stakes! You really want Spartacus his loyal soldiers & slaves that follow him on a path to a much better way of life; to overcome all of the overwhelming odds and all have there fairytale endings. And I have to say in the final battle against the Romans and when there slowly charging in towards Spartacus and his rebellions; it's so scary, picturesque, intimidating, spectacular & jaw dropping to look at all at the same time. A lot to do with that is how it's shot and you see the sheer scale that Spartacus and his rebellions are up against. It's just an amazing & awesome scene to watch. That whole build up when the Romans are walking in and how there all formated is so very well done. Stanley Kubrick always was a master of a spectacle and that entire moment is. Finally My Ratings & Scores for Spartacus is ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ & a 10/10
- Doc Worm31 mars 2026After watching a glut of modern era epics, Spartacus is a refreshing watch. While naïve on most of its subject matter and tragically outdated in some of its old school sensibilities, it ultimately stands the test of time in comparison many of its sword and sandal contemporaries. While it lacks Stanley Kubrick traditional artisanal eye, it does have a distinct visual flair to it and is competently shot throughout. Beyond its notorious behind the scenes drama, blood sweat and tears ooze through each of its handmade sets, props and backdrops. They really were building whole camps just to burn them down. Kirk Douglas is a complete stud in his role as Spartacus, bringing a confident swagger to its lead role. Truly a classic Hollywood saga. They just don’t make em like they used to.
