- DavidBunnyDad17 août 2026Future anthropologists will no doubt be flummoxed to learn there was a time when Lesley Ann Warren AND Lesley-Anne Down bestrode the Earth simultaneously. The more intrepid among them may discover that this epoch coincided with the mutual existence of Morgan Brittany and Morgan Fairchild, and presaged by a couple decades the bizarre Dylan McDermott-Dermot Mulroney phenomenon, which scientists have yet to fully explain. As if life weren't complicated enough. All of which is to say that Lesley-Anne Down and her otherworldly beauty are employed to magnetic effect in ``Rough Cut,'' a breezy 1980 jewel heist movie starring Burt Reynolds and directed by tough-guy auteur Don Siegel of ``Dirty Harry'' fame. Reynolds was at his peak then, cultivating a light romantic comedy persona to complement his light action-hero persona (he even tries out a Cary Grant impression at one point). This being a jewel heist movie set in England, David Niven also shows up to lend the film his ageless charm. Niven plays a police detective who's been pursuing Reynolds' elusive diamond thief for years. He blackmails Down -- who's run afoul of the law herself -- into seducing Burt to plan his biggest heist yet, where he'll presumably be nabbed at long last. Only she falls in love with Burt for real (those damn clever screenwriters!) The whole thing is really a testament to the power of movie stars to hold our interest. Reynolds, Down and Niven are as splendid as can be, and if their characters are paper-thin and Siegel isn't quite as effortless as Hitchcock in ``To Catch a Thief,'' well, gazing at Lesley-Anne Down and Burt Reynolds wearing expensive clothes is still a decent way to pass some time.
