Alice Lowe deserves credit for trying to write, direct, and star in her own very pregnant slasher fever dream, but for me Prevenge is a classic case of ambition swallowing entertainment whole. The setup is strong enough on paper, and that first kill really does jolt the movie awake, but after that it turns into a slow, self-satisfied crawl where the body count keeps rising while my interest flatlined. Lowe’s film was widely praised by critics for its audacity and dark-comic premise, with Rotten Tomatoes listing it at 95% and reviewers like The Guardian calling it a strong directorial debut, but I landed much closer to the minority view from RogerEbert.com, which called it a great gonzo idea looking for better execution. At a certain point I stopped caring about the plot, because the plot seemed to stop caring about itself, and I was basically fast-forwarding just to get to the kills, which were not even good enough to justify the homework. The whole thing feels like a slasher that mistakes sluggishness for mood and eccentricity for substance. Bold, sure. Effective? Not for me. By the end it felt less like a revenge movie and more like being trapped in a very smug prenatal class with a knife.

When my wife was pregnant, she'd say things like, "I just want to rip your face off, I can't explain it." What if when a pregnant woman says that or maybe, "Oh my God if you don't stop I'm gonna murder you!"... she actually means it? This slow-moving, premeditated movie answers those questions with an easy to follow script that cycles a few times: listen to unborn baby's commands, rage, stab, slice, remorse, repeat.
