- Patrick Wai-9 hMotor City feels less like a conventional movie and more like a filmmaking experiment. Set in 1977 Detroit, it looks surprisingly clean and polished in 4K. Part of me expected something grimier and grainier, closer to The French Connection, but the period detail still works beautifully. The cars, clothes, hair, interiors, and especially the music do a lot of the heavy lifting. And they have to, because there really isn’t much dialogue. That forces the actors, editing, cinematography, and soundtrack to communicate the story instead. Expressions matter. Body language matters. Music becomes almost another character, carrying scenes that would normally be driven by conversation. I can only imagine how much work went into finding songs that fit not just the period, but the emotional rhythm of each sequence. The basic revenge story is straightforward, but the director is clearly trying to make it about more than revenge. Underneath it is essentially a battle between two men competing for the same woman, with jealousy, obsession, pride, and possession driving much of the violence. Both leads are good, but the villain gets the juiciest material. It’s the kind of role where an actor gets to be charming, dangerous, ridiculous, threatening, and completely unhinged. He must have had an absolute blast. The action is brutal, and some sequences are staged extremely well. The elevator scene in particular is fantastic, tense, nasty, and visually memorable. But I think the film overstays its ending. It reaches what feels like a natural conclusion, then adds another final beat that pushes the symbolism too far and weakens what came before. Sometimes a movie knows exactly when to stop, then decides to take one more lap around the block. Still, I admired the ambition. A nearly dialogue-free revenge movie carried by acting, visuals, editing, and a wall-to-wall ’70s soundtrack is a risky idea, and for much of the running time it works. Not entirely successful, but definitely interesting. 6.5/10

- 23_Skidoo-1 jThis is a piece of art. When directors and a script uses the medium in different ways, like this flick, it can elevate or distract. Motor City does both, but luckily more elevation than distraction. I recommend it.
- old_computer27 août 2026There's a reason nobody has even done this before. It's beyond stupid. Basically this is a visualizer video for music. Everybody looks like a parody character of some over the top 70s costume party and the movie is just extremely stupid. This idea doesn't work and this movie or music video is a prime example of why we should never do this again. AIDS.
- Joseph Garlow-4 jThis movie has a decent storyline, great cast but the way they "stylized" the movie...horrible. I think what 10 words spoken in the whole movie maybe. I know people think this sort of thing is cool, but to me it just makes a dump of a movie and I don't think it really helps any of their careers. Shalene looked AMAZING in this movie but again she always does, Alan and Ben are great but again without words...you don't really get to see the acting chops they could have. Glad I watched it...not really, would I watch it again...nope. Should you watch it...if you like the stylized movie thing then yes, if not...nope.
- fhe8231 août 2026Motor City (2026) Pretty bold artistic decision for an action movie. And surprisingly, the almost complete lack of dialogue works for most of it. There are definitely a few scenes where the characters just stare at each other or point at things like they are training a dog. At first, I honestly thought Alan Ritchson’s character was mute or deaf. Leaving those awkward moments aside, though, the story moves pretty well without much dialogue. Actually, scratch that. No dialogue at all. The action scenes work especially well in that format. The movie leans heavily on the music score to carry the rhythm, and while it does not always land, sometimes it really does pull you into the scene. Then comes the final boss fight. And yes, I am calling it that so everybody understands exactly what I mean. That is where the production earns its money. Brutal, physical, well staged, and very reminiscent of The Raid. Props to the production team. And that ending... Well, that is one hell of a grudge to carry. Thanks for reading.
- silentlord-1 jI'm sure this the perfect movie for someone. But, that someone is not me. I love quirky movies. A new twist or a little experimental. I made it through about 30 minutes of this.
- Lord Juggins29 août 2026Great to see a pulp style film in 2026, great how for 99% of the film a word isn’t spoken, great story telling with the cinematography, fantastic music and sound. Great acting and a pleasure to watch something fresh in 2026. A great film to watch. Throughly enjoyed it, great cast and gritty, pulp style action, throughout.

- Bozwayne-2 jI am going to go 3.5 because the ammount of lifting the actors had to do, to overcome the sparce script. It was exactly what I expected it to be, just delivered in a way i was not at all expecting. So strong 3 on delivery of the tried and true story line; but the way the actors had to carry this.... yeah.... 3.5, with a tip of the cap to all tallent involved.
