Mimi a tout essayé pour devenir la femme d'Alan mais ce dernier a finalement choisi Elizabeth, sa mère, un écrivain de romans d'amour qui n'a jamais eu beaucoup de chance avec les hommes. Mimi décide alors d'obtenir un poste d'illustratrice à la New York Chronicle, où travaille son ami Jimmy.
