It is suspenseful, nasty, and gory when it needs to be, and the final stretch is absolutely brutal in the best possible way. Even critics who were mixed on the slow-burn approach kept praising the ending as a gut-punch, with Rotten Tomatoes calling it “bloody and brutal” and other reviewers singling out the finale as the movie’s real weapon. What I liked most is that it is not the typical survival-horror setup you think it is. The father looks like the competent outdoorsman hero, then slowly reveals himself to be a lot less impressive than advertised, which makes the whole movie feel nastier and smarter. It is not perfect, but it earns a lot of points for refusing to be predictable where it counts and for ending on a note that is both savage and satisfying.

Joseph Mersault, sa femme Anne et leur fille Renée vivent dans une région sauvage et reculée. Le père gagne sa vie comme trappeur mais depuis quelques temps, les affaires vont mal.
