His First Case
Réalisé par Lorimer JohnstonDon McDonald, a young law graduate who lacks nothing but clients, looks ahead with more than professional interest to the securing of business, since the father of his sweetheart, Clara Johnson, has decreed that the young folks shall not marry until Don wins his first case in court. How great his sense of responsibility, therefore, when it comes to pass that his very first case is the defense of Johnson himself against a charge of murder. Johnson's trouble comes about through his playing poker all night with a couple of sharpers. At sunrise, fleeced of all his money and even his watch, he falls asleep in his chair. In a quarrel over a division of the spoils, one of the crooks shoots and kills the other. He throws the blame upon Johnson, and at the latter's trial swears Johnson did the deed to get even for the loss of his money. By a clever ruse, however, Don tears his story to pieces, frees Johnson, and according to the latter's word, gets the girl.
