Où regarder Funny Games
- Michael Haneke's Funny Games has an iron grip on its own identity. It never bends to the expectations people usually bring into a horror film, and it never seems interested in offering the audience the comfort of familiar storytelling. That confidence is what impressed me more than anything else. Every scene feels deliberate, every pause feels calculated, and the film somehow creates unbearable tension without relying on the tricks the genre usually falls back on. Seeing a younger Ulrich Mühe was an unexpected bonus as well. Having first come to admire him through The Lives of Others, it was fascinating to watch one of his earlier performances in a film that demanded something completely different while reminding me just how naturally compelling he was on screen. What really won me over were the filmmaking choices that could have easily backfired in less capable hands. Watch for the occasional frozen frames. They're an incredibly bold stylistic decision, yet instead of pulling you out of the experience they quietly increase the sense that something is deeply wrong. Arno Frisch's Paul is just as inspired. Every so often he turns his attention away from the other characters and speaks directly to the audience, making us feel less like observers and more like unwilling participants in his game. It's one of the creepiest creative decisions I've seen in horror because it never feels as though it's trying to be clever for its own sake. I usually reserve my highest praise in foreign horror for French cinema, but Funny Games earned every bit of the reputation that brought me to it. It left me convinced I'd finally watched one of the genre's genuine landmarks.
