Au XIVe siècle, à Veracruz au Mexique, un alchimiste créée l'horloge Cronos, un scarabée d'or mécanique dont une piqure de son dard offrirait l'immortalité à son utilisateur. Ce dernier finit par trouver la mort dans l'effondrement d'un immeuble en 1937, la peau blanchie comme du marbre. 60 ans plus tard, l'horloge est retrouvée par un vieil antiquaire, Jésus Gris, qui l'active involontairement sur lui. Il en ressent les effets, mais développe aussi une dépendance envers l'objet et une soudaine soif de sang. Il ne tarde pas à être la cible d'un riche homme d'affaire mourant, prêt à tout pour s'emparer de l'horloge.
