Instead of creative alien gadgets, the film relies on an abusive, autobiographical trauma dump and a literal poop machine gun that is painfully stupid to sit through. While Xu Jiao delivers a genuinely solid acting debut as the young boy, the overall tone is bizarrely dark for a family film, featuring unsettling moments of animal cruelty, heavy parental death, and a jarring hanging scene. It tries way too hard to yank at your heartstrings but ends up feeling horribly preachy and uncomfortable. This easily occupies the absolute bottom of Chow's filmography. Neeeext.
