L'action se situe à New York pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Miller, un boulanger d'un certain âge, est assassiné par un sinistre inconnu. Alfred « Gloves » Donahue, qui était son associé de longue date et son ami, essaie de trouver le coupable ; lui-même est un petit gangster mais la plupart du temps inoffensif et affable. Une piste le conduit jusqu'à une chanteuse en boîte de nuit, Leda Hamilton, qui lui apprend qu'elle et Miller étaient sous la coupe d'une organisation nazie, une cinquième colonne, dirigée par Ebbing. Gloves lui-même est soupçonné d'avoir assassiné un membre du gang rival et doit démasquer le coupable pour prouver son innocence.

- theLillyPad28 mars 2026Nazis vs Gangsters! This film has scenes that feel like they were peeled right from the deadliest warrior. Bogart plays the straight man to a cast of goofy gangsters--at time maybe a touch TOO goofy for the movie's good. It wants to switch from intense murder scenes to bungling gunmen a bit to often. The main premise works though, and its a lot of fun. The main cast all play their roles excellently--even if the propaganda is a little on the nose. The message gives the film a distinctly pulpy, patriotic feel. This movie won't change your life, but will be a good time!
