⭐⭐⭐ – 9 – Dark threads in a small, stitched world. This is a simple story on the surface, but it earns respect for how far it’s willing to push its tone. For a film that sits in the “family” space, it’s surprisingly dark — bleak, even — in a way that feels rare for the twenty-first century. There’s a willingness here to let things be unsettling, and that alone makes it stand out. The narrative itself is fairly straightforward. It doesn’t twist or reinvent much, and you can see where it’s heading early on. But that simplicity works in contrast to the world it builds — a post-apocalyptic setting filled with strange, fragile creations trying to survive against forces far bigger than they are. Visually, it’s where the film really shines. The aesthetic is distinctive and memorable, with a handcrafted, stitched-together feel that gives everything a sense of texture and weight. It’s the kind of design that sticks with you long after the details of the plot fade. At its core, it’s about perseverance — small beings pushing forward in a broken world, refusing to give up even when the odds are clearly against them. That message lands, even if the storytelling around it doesn’t always elevate beyond the basics. It may not be groundbreaking in structure, but its tone and visual identity are bold enough to make it worth watching — if nothing else, for the atmosphere it creates. ☕ A dark roast coffee — bitter, brooding, and stronger than you expect for something that looks this small.

A bleak, unsettling animated film with a heavy post-apocalyptic atmosphere. Elijah Wood brings quiet vulnerability to 9, anchoring a world filled with loss, fear, and consequence. Dark, philosophical, and visually haunting. Not a comfort watch, but a memorable one.

"9" employs the medium of animation to weave a sophisticated tale, perhaps softening the starkness of its post-apocalyptic setting. The story follows the adventures of burlap beings as they navigate conflicts with menacing machines and unravel the profound secrets of their creation.
