It just felt like every other war story. I really wanted to like this and had been looking forward to seeing it. Just a big miss for me.
- AngusMcNutz18 avril 2025The true masculine urge to crawl through the trenches and slowly bleed out with your homies. All jokes aside, I find the main appeal of Sam Mendes' films is the sense of balance he's able to cultivate; this film being the most exemplary display. War films usually dump attention to pacing and structure for emotional gut punches over and over. As seen here, its entirely more effective to land a couple direct haymakers rather than a barrage of jabs.
- Jamie Talbot27 octobre 2025Really really good movie. The ‘one-shot’ take of this movie is what really put it all together and made it feel realistic and made you feel like you were there. Even though it wasn’t shot in one take, it was really clever cinematography and editing to make it feel like it was just one continuous shot. I found it quite funny to learn that the longest scene shot was only 8 and a half minutes long. My favourite scene was when the town was completely lit by fire and flares. It felt so beautiful.
- Jay Marie Bailey-2 jStellar cast with some aspects of what life was like in the trenches during the first world war. Don't for a minute think this is a true story, yes there were runners that much is true. It successfully captures the psychological terror, the chaos of broken communication, and the visceral filth of the Great War, all wrapped around the core truth of a grandfather’s real-life bravery.
- Cubane7 avril 2026The whole one shot technique is usually an Oscar bait tool leveraged at the expense of everything else about the film. This movie is the exception. The technique is used with such mastery that you're put right next to the subjects on screen. The terror they feel is yours too. There are some liberties taken with the history to make the script work, but the broad strokes are all there. The movie deftly explores the staggering waste of life that the great war induced.
- Crimsonblack28 février 2026This is an amazing film....glad I watched it, but I never want to see it again. It's a harrowingly frank portrayal of trench warfare shot in only one or two shots. I would include a warning: viewer discretion is advised, it's frankly upsettingly realistic, and might be too much for some viewers.
- Modern Media HD Group15 mars 2025Absolutely stunning 1917 was gifted a full fat native 4K digital intermediate, capping off source material that was shot at even higher resolutions, and perfectly rendering this oftentimes visually perfect feature. Detail is outstanding, lapping up every little nuance of the dirty, damage-strewn battlefront, the dust-and-dirt-covered visages and tattered uniforms. Messy and occasionally almost horrific, the presentation revels in the textured intricacies, further coming alive superbly thanks to the added assistance of not only HDR and WCG but also Dolby Vision and HDR10+
