This ground-breaking television series goes down previously forbidden roads and does so with gusto, seemingly without constraint. Well, one constraint...time. In my opinion, it tries to do too much in too little space. It wants to be a drama, a comedy, and a fantasy, while opening many storylines in short (approximately 30-minute) episodes, within a short 8-episode season (1). The storylines are good but only partially explored with so much left on the table. Season 2 does a better job with longer episodes but there are only two of them. By contrast, Russell T Davies' later series "Cucumber" (which I highly recommend) takes full advantage of its longer time slot and gives the viewer a more sated feeling. No offense to British audiences, but I would recommend skipping this series and going straight to the American version (by the same name) where exact and similar storylines, plus new ones, are given their due, and grown to full fruition. That's what you can do with 5 seasons encompassing 83 (45/60-minute) episodes.
