Thumbs up for the history lesson. Thumbs down for the storytelling. That's the short of it. The well-intended Gallipoli campaign of 1915 was abysmally planned, although bravely executed. This mini-series puts a spotlight on the heroic Australian and New Zealander troops that gave their all, in spite of questionable leadership. Their valor would become legendary. The series mixes real and fictional characters, and plays like a gritty soap opera interspersed with bloody battle scenes. The (sometimes cloudy) subplots are as depressing as the war itself. There are no moral victories to speak of, other than survival. It's likely you will remember the real ANZAC soldiers and the sacrifices they made, and that's good. It's unlikely, however, that you will remember the fictional characters and their poorly-developed storylines, and that's too bad. My advice? Skip this mini-series and watch the 1981 movie, by the same name, starring Mel Gibson. Better character development. Better storytelling.

Good portrayal of the ANZACs and how much loss of life they suffered due to the lack of good leadership/decisions... but the main character subplot is weird & unbearable and it's impossible to root for him.
