- One of those early HBO shows that has held up well. So many of those early 2000s HBO series were launch pads for many recognizable actors today. Go through the cast of this show, and you likely will recognize at least half of them, if not more. The standouts, to me, are Ian McShane, Molly Parker and Timothy Olyphant. Ian McShane plays Al Swearingen with such charisma, it is easy to forget that he is a villain of sorts. Timothy laid the groundwork here for what would be a similar role in Justified (along with some actors from this show making appearances in the latter. And Molly Parker as a young, but not naive, rich girl in a wild frontier absolutely shines. The downside is this show can initially be a little difficult to follow as the vernacular was lifted from newspaper clippings, and was reportedly historically accurate. Subtitles helps for those of us that are better visual processors than auditory processors. Also of note, the series can feel a little more like a “collection of events” than a true serial story with neat beginnings and tidy endings as it is loosely based on real people and real events, with some artistic license. Where they chose to take that license and where they did not left me scratching my head in various places, but I think knowing these are based on real history, will help with understanding some of the “unresolved” issues. Overall, this is one my favorite HBO shows. Fans of westerns and period dramas should be entertained.
