The Director (Mamura Hosoda) loves his supernatural spins on typical situations but the happiest (and scariest) parts of this movie are profoundly grounded in relatable family stuff. Every time I expected some thriller-like twist to raise the stakes I was instead met with something simple and (ironically) way more impactful. I will never forget this movie and recommend it to anyone. Summer Wars (2009) is good palette cleanser in case you want more fun without lasting profound reflections on life.

It has easily become one of my absolute favorite animated films. The level of visual detailing is nothing short of extraordinary, and the narrative delivers a profoundly emotional, beautifully poignant story about motherhood and identity. A must watch if you haven't seen it yet!
