Or so it seems. --- Pastor Tomas is a man unraveling—not in rage or collapse, but in the slow suffocation of unanswered prayer. Once the shepherd of souls, now he is the echo chamber of his own doubt. He preaches, but the words don’t land. He serves communion, but his hands are numb. He listens, but hears only the roar of his own despair. When a congregant begs him for a reason to go on living, he answers with silence that masquerades as honesty— and the man kills himself. And maybe that’s where grace begins. --- The Service Continues The final scene is quiet. No resolution. No transformation. Just Tomas, standing at the altar, speaking the words of a liturgy he barely believes. And yet—he speaks them. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. It is a surrender, not to clarity, but to calling. To the haunting possibility that faith is not the absence of doubt, but the refusal to walk away. That God might still be hidden behind the silence, beneath the ash, within the very liturgy that feels dead. And if that is true, then Winter Light is not a film about despair, but about cruciform faith: the kind that keeps lighting candles in a sanctuary that feels abandoned.
