It is set during World War II, on the day after D-Day, but it is more a story about community and the futility of war. It is a character study of a small group of people being moved around by events much larger than themselves. At first, it appears there may be clear villains, but as the story unfolds, they turn out to be simply people caught up in the same situation. Looked at in that way, I think the movie succeeds to some degree. If you go into it expecting a traditional war movie, however, it does not succeed at all. I also found Red Buttons irritating, which did not help. I would rate the film slightly below average, but it does have something worthwhile to say about people, community, and the confusion surrounding war. Just don’t go into it looking for a traditional war movie.
