Union County is a solid picture that follows Cody Parson (Will Poulter), who is sentenced to drug court due to an opiate addiction. The film tracks his recovery journey in rural Ohio, and the use of nonprofessional actors, including real judges, clerks, and participants from an actual Ohio drug court program, gives the story a clear sense of authenticity. It captures the real stakes and some of the true life costs of addiction, along with the ways opioids have shaped small town America.
Poulter is very good in the role, although he almost stands out too much, as parts of his character arc feel predictable or clearly shaped for dramatic effect. Even so, the film remains a solid piece of work.
