Ambos compiten por ser los primeros en analizar estos peculiares fenómenos meteorológicos desde dentro de un tornado. Su objetivo es analizar en profundidad la mayor tormenta que caerá sobre Oklahoma en el último medio siglo. En uno de los grupos está Jo Harding, una mujer que, con escasos medios y a punto de divorciarse, tendrá que pedir ayuda a su todavía marido Bill. Este se la da, pero se presenta acompañado de su nueva novia.

I saw it in the cinema when it came out and honestly, that’s the ideal way to experience it. The sound system practically tried to blow you out of your seat every time a tornado showed up, which was often, because the movie has the subtlety of a flying cow. Directed by our very own Jan de Bont, Twister has that unmistakable “Dutch guy given a Hollywood budget” energy. Everything is fast, everything is loud and everything is filmed like the camera operator was hanging off the side of a truck going 80 km/h. And it works. The movie has a kinetic, frantic feel that makes even the dumbest moments entertaining. The plot is classic disaster movie simplicity: storm chasers trying to launch a scientific device into tornadoes while dealing with personal drama, rival teams and the fact that nature hates them. Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton carry the film with a mix of charm and “we’re too tired to be doing this” energy that fits perfectly with the constant chaos around them. The tornado effects were groundbreaking at the time and seeing them in the cinema felt like watching the weather try to murder you in Dolby Surround. The flying debris, the exploding barns, the trucks being thrown into the sky, it was all part of that glorious 90s disaster wave where Hollywood kept trying to outdo itself. Dante’s Peak, Volcano, Independence Day, Armageddon, it was a golden era of cinematic destruction just like back in the 70s. Twister stands out because it’s fun. It doesn’t pretend to be deep, it doesn’t try to be realistic and it doesn’t waste time. It’s just two hours of tornadoes chasing people who keep driving directly into them and somehow, it’s great. A loud, wild, wonderfully ridiculous disaster classic and a proud moment where a Dutch director showed Hollywood how to make weather look terrifying.

It has a great sense of momentum, rarely sits still for long, and always feels like it's building toward the next big moment. There's a certain charm to the whole thing that a lot of modern blockbusters seem to be missing, and the practical effects help give everything a little extra weight. It's also pretty thin in places. The story is simple, some of the dialogue is downright corny, and you're not exactly watching it for deep character development. But Helen Hunt does a lot to keep things grounded, and Philip Seymour Hoffman brings a ton of personality whenever he shows up. It may not be the most memorable movie ever made, but it's a fun ride while it lasts.

Had been trying to get my kids to watch this for weeks, but none of them seemed interested in the slightest and were very skeptical after the watching the trailer following it up with their usual “What year was it made?” question because they know it never fails to make me feel very old. As I expected, they enjoyed it. It’s a brilliantly paced actioner that really is kind of an overlooked blockbuster from the past.

With a plot that can be terrifying, electrifying, hilarious, and touching all at once, a hot cast of talent, special effects that live up even to today's standards ( 30 years later ), and a magnificent crew along with flawless direction, this movie had it and still has got it all.... period.
