Dónde ver The Empty Man
- Opening is great, mid section struggles to find its way and eventually does. Personal highlight is the "yeah, no" scene in the forest lmao. Ending is ambitious, but ultimately doesn't completely land. I like the way it goes off the rails in the end, but there's some stuff that just doesn't work plotwise. Spoiler: Our main guy is a tulpa, but it creates a bunch of glaring plotholes. Script gets a bit too messy because of it. Honestly wish they would've gone all in on the lovecraftian aspect throughout the movie, instead of the whole boogeyman angle in the middle. Distractingly bad acting by Sasha Frolova btw, dear god. Definitely worth a watch. Will not be going in my top list or anything.
- Loved the story, I found it super intriguing and it hooked me right away. I also found that it passed by so fast even though it’s a decently long runtime. It never felt like it dragged on or overstayed its welcome. That being said, I did think it was missing something, but what exactly? I’m not too sure. It did feel a bit convoluted and I felt like I still didn’t really know what happened once it ended. Maybe giving it a second watch will shed some light on everything. I wish it was a little scarier and maybe a little less cheesy when it was trying to be scary. Overall, quite enjoyable film that should have been better advertised. I’m a sucker for cults and lovecraft.
- ## Synopsis A former police officer helps his friend find her daughter, only to find that her daughter isn't missing. ## Review I had never heard of this movie. If it weren't for James Badge Dale, who plays Roan in [[13 Hours]], I'd have never watched it. This movie released in Oct of 2020 when much of the US was still in a haphazard lockdown and no one was going to the movies. At least not to see a movie with almost zero marketing. And that might have saved this movie from just getting dumped on. It has all the vibes of a film student horror movie, trying to make their way through it with a heady ending that either negates the entire movie, or clicks like a light bulb depending on how you saw the movie. What this movie does very well is this since of creep throughout the movie. The music and tones that is used has these minor notes that rub you the wrong way. Add that with a vignette to make the background always a bit darker than the subject and you have this sense of someone lurking in the background, which does match the movie. The story is interesting. Following the world's obsession with Slender man, urban myth's have really taken over. This one is an interesting tie end between urban legends, cults, and some mythical monster lore. ## [My Rating] The ending killed me. I wanted the ending to have a greater weight than what it had. It frustrated me more because I felt like it was more metaphysical and heady than worthwhile, so I have to watch that frustration when reviewing this. I really enjoyed the creepy feeling of this movie. It made me so interested in what was going to happen next. There is one scene where James does what all horror movie people should do and just "nopes" out, which is exactly what most people in horror movies should do. I wanted to give this a 6, but without the end and my maybe my overly aggressive frustration with it, this is an 8. So average it to a 7? ## [Parental Rating] Language, a covered sex scene, and some graphic deaths. Plus the nature of cosmic horror isn't really their vibe. The violence and death isn't graphic like [[Pearl]] or [[Obsession]], but it isn't nice. So with that, plus the death scenes and language, this is an easy rejected by both.
- Very compelling concept, flawed execution. Great beginning, good ending, the middle is hit and miss with some great moments sprinkled in with stuff that probably could've been cut. There are a couple moments of questionable acting but for the most part it's pretty good. The girl he's looking for has a distractingly terrible haircut. 7.5/10
- Movie you can't watch if there's a risk of falling asleep cause there are some slow parts that might push you over. Set up for the mythos is fairly good with like a couple weird decisions, but it works overall. Middle section part of the movie is alright, and some parts get better and some get worse towards the end. Feels like they didn't fully want to tie the story together but have the viewer decide some aspects of it. Might require a second viewing to make sure I got everything since, as I said, I was struggling to stay awake during some parts that were slower, I was watching this at around 11:15pm, finished by around 1:15am. Still think the set up and mythos are the stronger parts about it and would recommend it to fans of horror mixed with thriller, might even be necessary to be a philosophy enthusiast to be invested in some of the approach to some concepts.
- I absolutely despise movies like this. Is this a movie about an urban legend (The Empty Man) who goes around killing anyone who blows on an empty bottle and thinks about him? Or is this a movie about an ancient evil entity being manifested in a cult? Pick one, you can't have both! I really hate when the protaganist has been "imagining" the whole thing (or being programmed or whatever). Really lazy script writing. It's like the writers partway through the script all took LSD and then finished the script. I only gave it two stars because parts were really scary, otherwise I would have given it one star.
