Taking Chance Some movies find you when you're not even looking for them. That's exactly what happened to me. A few clips showed up on my YouTube feed this afternoon and I couldn't look away. That led me to one of the best films I've seen in a long time. Taking Chance (2009) stars Kevin Bacon and is based on the true story of Lt. Col. Michael Struble, a Marine officer who volunteers to escort the body of 19-year-old Lance Corporal Chance Phelps back home to Wyoming after he was killed in Iraq. That's the whole movie. And it's something you really need to see. This is not your typical movie night pick. There are no big speeches, no over the top emotional moments, nothing that feels forced. Kevin Bacon is just incredible here. He plays everything quietly and with total control, and somehow that makes every scene hit harder than anything loud ever could. And Kevin always wears a military uniform well. The heart of the film is the journey itself. Watching Struble go through airports and follow the process of bringing Chance home, you see ordinary Americans treating this young Marine with real respect and dignity every step of the way. It's moving without ever trying to be. As a veteran, this one hit me personally. But honestly, you don't have to have served to feel it. You just have to be willing to sit with it. If you haven't seen Taking Chance, do yourself a favor and watch it.
