From all the negative critic reviews, I'm reminded that most critics were English majors and have no ability to articulate thoughts about visual composition, photography, cinematography, production design, etc. (if they even have thoughts about them). They focus on words, they communicate their thoughts to you with words. When it comes to words .... yeah, it's a simple, almost 1950s b-movie plot told in a contemplative, quiet, and claustrophobic style. But it's also one of the most visually impressive films of the 1970s and has--to this day--some fantastic macro photographic images of insects as well as some of the most mind-bending editing since Eisenstein. If you're a sci-fi "fan" who wants a pew pew Star Wars type ride or someone who is made uncomfortable by the ambiguity of imagery in a story (and genre) that is, in many ways, about the unknown and unknowable, then this ain't for you.

Surreal ant movie. It's pretty good overall, but being an early 70's movie expect an ending like 2001 that is more esoteric than sensible. I would watch it again.

I can't understand how this film is labelled as a horror film.

Lost 4 min sequence is 5 star easy. So happy it was found again 🙏
  • An early eco-terror classic that echoes elements of the Andromeda Strain and environmental changes. Brilliant and real insect sequences that are staged perfectly to keep the story flowing.

Not even good for the time. Thankfully short at 80 minutes.
