Matt Dillon in his 1st feature film about bored rich kids who rebel against their small town authorities.

The half-way point between Dazed and Confused and Children of the Corn but more raucous and unhinged than either. This is Matt Dillon's first film but his star power is already undeniable in it. You can tell the casting director of The Outsiders definitely saw this film first. It's a film that pushed the envelope in terms of its depiction of rebellious teens. The drug use is more rampant than any of the teenage 80s films that would follow. The violent stakes are also higher than in any similar film I've seen. It's a constantly exploding powder keg of teenage rebellion in a colorfully depicted idiosyncratic setting. It's both hysterical and unsettling.

My quick rating - 7.0/10. I had never seen this one, but this is a very well-made and acted story about a new suburb and what happens when the majority of its population is around 15 years old. The fact that it is based on a true story about teen rebellion is not surprising in the slightest, and I would expect the same thing would happen now, just as it did in 1979. Dillon does a really nice job as one of the main "punks" in this one, but all the kids were quite good.
