Gambling as a metaphor for how risky it was living your truth as a queer person in that era is an interesting idea but I don’t think this film quite makes it work. It’s just a little all over the place and frankly, a bit boring. I thought Will Poulter was good especially in his last scenes but found pretty much everyone else a bit stiff. I think it’s just something about the dialogues which didn’t come across natural to me at all. And don’t yell at me but I thought all the gay relationships in the film lacked fire. Sure they’re kissing and banging the oomph just lacked for me. Diego Calva is hot.

I’m torn on On Swift Horses, a film that boasts strong performances from Daisy Edgar-Jones, Will Poulter, Jacob Elordi, and Diego Calva but can’t quite make its romantic longing feel revelatory. The issue isn’t so much the restraint—director Daniel Minahan clearly understands the slow burn of repression—but the unintentional comedy that creeps in when characters remain willfully oblivious to desires that the audience clocked from the jump. It’s handsome in that gauzy, prestige-lit way, with plenty of wistful glances set against moody casinos and endless highways, but the film’s muted approach blunts its dramatic edge, leaving the emotions stuck in second gear. But, yeah, I really don’t think it was meant to be as funny as the SXSW audience found it.

This movie thrives on ambiguity, what’s left unsaid, and occasionally ruins it but I really enjoyed this journey. There’s something beautifully…nonjudgmental and human about this.

This is a film about nuance; about reading non-verbal cues; and, as the title suggests, about the balance between personal freedom and being a controlled rider of your own journey. We all have to decide if we want to race and enjoy it or take cautious steps without risk.

Watching this film was like watching a sexy painting. Beautifully shot and made, great acting, and a whole lot of sexual tension. It blended some really nice genre’s of the past, such as noir and melodrama. It had a really great cast that all felt very real and fun to watch. The music choices were fun. And there is a really nice little twist towards the end that definitely got me. It’s just not my go to type of movie. I do love the time period and different dramas like this, but for some reason it felt a tad slow and at times not as entertaining as I would’ve wanted? As a piece of art, it’s beautiful. As a film, it’s for me personally just not as rewatchable or game changing. 3/5.
