Do yourself a favor and go watch the original. This is nowhere near the level of ingenuity of Park Chan-wook's Oldboy (2003). While Spike Lee calls his movie a "reinterpretation," it is unengaging, confused, and severely lacking in all departments. Even if this was a movie that wasn't based on an existing work, this movie suffers from rushed pacing, bad writing, and boring action to stave off the audience's boredom. But given that this is based on an existing South Korean film, Lee's Oldboy is an insult to it and completely misunderstands what made Park-woo's Oldboy so engaging. Instead of taking cues of the original's success in creating an intriguing story with a layered plot, amazing tension, and unbelievably shocking payoff, Lee's Oldboy however, opts to utilize the major story beats of the original film while not understanding what made the original so great. This is, by all accounts, a horrendously made film full of bad writing and weak performances. You will do yourself a disservice if you do not watch the original movie. Anyone who thinks this movie is good, I guarantee you, has not seen the original.

This movie should come with trigger warnings. Intense and diabolical cerebral drama. Heavy violence and themes that may touch sensitivities. Proceed with caution.

Honestly shocking to see Spike Lee made something like this, especially the fight scene that has the most embarrassing choreography I can remember.
