Saw this one in the cinema when it came out and it was one of those crowd pleasers that had everyone chuckling, even the dads who claimed they didn’t like “baby movies.” Kirstie Alley plays Mollie, a single mom navigating love, diapers and awkward cab rides. John Travolta shows up as the charming cabbie with a heart of gold and Bruce Willis voices baby Mikey with enough sass to fill a daycare. The concept was fresh at the time: a romantic comedy told partly through the inner monologue of a newborn. It’s silly, sentimental and surprisingly sharp in places. The cast brings warmth, Olympia Dukakis as the no nonsense mom, George Segal as the sleazy ex and Abe Vigoda as the grumpy grandpa. The chemistry works, even when the plot leans into sitcom territory. It’s not high art, but it’s got heart. The voiceover gimmick could’ve flopped, but Willis makes it work. The film walks a fine line between cute and corny and somehow lands on the right side. I liked it then, and I still smile when I think of Mikey’s commentary on adult nonsense. It’s the kind of movie that made adult years feel light, nostalgic and just cheeky enough to earn a rewatch.
