If the villain from The Babadook and your sleep paralysis had a blackout baby, it’d be this

Underrated AF. A simple but good storyline and great a great modern jumpscare horror. A genre that is fleeting (the jumpscare variety that is) so I enjoy the decent ones when they come along. 7.5/10

One of my favourites, and one of the best horror movies I ever watched!

Born from a short. Unlike many other people, I seem to think this transferred pretty well to long form entertainment. It was plenty creepy and had some fleshed out ideas that it explored. I enjoyed it. My children love it.

My quick rating - 6.8/10. Behold the fear of the dark. Many people have it and will identify with that. I assume not so many have had to deal with this level of phobia. The setup is introduced quickly, so my telling you a spirit that only appears in the dark and vanishes in the light is no spoiler. Just that this particular ghost kills anyone who threatens her. With that being said, the stage is set to scare the crap out of the viewer at any given moment, making an 81-minute movie fly by. The director (if you saw the short film on "The Fear" TV show from England) took his 5-minute idea and blew it up into a full-length scarefest. To take that simple idea and incorporate the actual anxiety of psychological issues people have into horror was done quite well. Kinda reminded me of "The Babadook" in that aspect. The eerie-looking ghost of "Diana" was creepy-looking throughout, even in the dark. The lighting, of course, is critical in this movie. Each flicker of light, or dark space, is a key part of the film and if it wasn't done properly, would ruin scene after scene. The good news is this did not happen. Every bit of attention was given to this detail, as good directors will do. Such was the case with "Crawl or Die" and countless other well-crafted films like this one. Suggesting to turn off the lights and watch this next to your loved one goes without saying, but I would show the kids out of the room unless you want to be awoken when they have nightmares. A very good film with a powerful ending that may leave you a bit surprised. Enjoy

This movie’s a James Wan production, so you already know it’s gonna be a banger. Any horror that’s got Wan’s fingerprints on it is basically a seal of quality at this point. Lights Out isn’t the greatest or most special horror movie ever made, but it definitely stands out for having an original story, a unique villain/entity & some really clever scare setups. I’ve seen this one a bunch of times, so the magic’s worn off a bit, but it still holds up as a cool, rewatchable horror flick that knows exactly what it is. It doesn’t overstay its welcome, doesn’t try too hard to be deep, it’s just a cool concept with a mediocre storyline but does what it actually sets out to do which is be a fun excuse for some epic jump scares & eerie visuals. Simple concept, solid execution , & effective horror that delivers what it promises. Fun Fact: Lights Out actually started as a short film by the same director, David F. Sandberg. The short went so viral (you probably remember) online that James Wan noticed it & helped turn it into a full length movie, which was the catalyst that launched Sandberg’s career & eventually landing him Annabelle: Creation & Shazam! at WB.
