This movie is grand but shallow at the same time. I watched this in IMAX and the scope of the set pieces are absolutely amazing. The lighting is also handled really well. And the fight scenes go hard, it’s shot with clarity and the sound design makes it perfectly impactful. On the one hand the powerfully emotive acting does affect the gravitas of various scenes, but the character writing and story is weak and hence it fails to pull any of your heart strings. It felt more like a nice looking entertaining flick to pass the time but not much complexity to care enough about the story. The emperors this time around are two caricaturish lame villains with no backstory and zero bite. Paul Mescal is fantastic, never seen him embody such a ferocious masculine personality. I wish we could see at least some camaraderie between him and his teammates but there’s none. At least his conversations with Ravi was a nice touch. Denzel is also masterful as usual, using his cunning wiles to ascend the ladder, but in the end his plans also get a bit comical, which is inevitable when dealing with empty character writing for the emperors. God they really underutilised the legacy characters, Grachhus is barely in the movie while Lucilla isn’t up to a whole lot of scheming here and is mostly relegated to being a grieving mother. I enjoyed seeing Pedro Pascal but also it seemed too similar to Maximus’s character so it felt like a repeat, I guess I noticed it more since I watched the first movie 2 days before this sequel. Spoiler Ahead. I also feel the Lucius reveal was kind of meh, didn’t really enhance the story for me that much and it seemed forced, the writers just chalk it up to fate that he ends up in Rome as a gladiator. I did learn something new though, that kids with blonde hair can actually turn into adults with dark brown hair. Despite tons of flaws the movie was entertaining enough and is worth checking out for the epic visuals and action scenes.

This movies one and only massive positive is Denzel Washington every scene he was in was an absolute scene stealer!! However not much else worked for me at all. It is watchable & entertaining to a degree, but I wasn't nearly as gripped or engaged with any of the fighting in this unnecessary sequel, like I was in the first film not even close. It was all way over the top and didn't feel nearly as grounded or as realistic as the original. Seriously come on having sharks 🦈 🦈 in the arena was very strange and ridiculous tbh!! Not to mention how terrible the CGI looked also. I wasn't on the edge of my seat or invested in it all that much. The only time my eyes were glued to the screen was whenever Denzel was onscreen he's by far the best thing about this movie. And most of all why was there a sequel? We didn't need one, the story was completed in the first film. Not af any point did I feel that this sequel justified it's existence which for me was the most frustrating thing! Or we're starting a new storyline through his son now, what a lazy & lame excuse for this 2nd film; it doesn't bring anything new to the table or enhance the lore or anything. If anything Gladiator 2 does more of a disservice to the 2000 masterpiece!!

Not bad. Not as good as the first one, but you will enjoy it if you don't expect it to be better than the original. Vae Victis!!

Gladiator 2 is arguably the most overhyped film of the past decade.

Tired and boring. And c’mon Denzel, let’s see you act. You’re great as yourself in all the other movies, NOT THIS THOUGH

As a huge fan of Gladiator from 2000, I find this sequel to be a profanation. The film is weak in every aspect. Emotionally, I feel nothing for any of the characters: Mescal is completely devoid of charisma, Washington is over the top, Pascal looks like he's about to cry, and the others are just decorations in the scenes. The fights are completely unengaging and lack authenticity, probably because of the CGI spilling out of the screen (the scene with the sharks is pure sci-fi). The music, which was a strong asset in the original, only becomes noticeable here when it is copied from the original - which in itself is a very weak attempt to play on the viewer's emotions. To sum up: a weak film with overly obvious special effects - an unnecessary film.

Had potential. Poor execution. Outdated directing style and cinematography. Frankly ridiculous dialogue and character interactions completely unrealistic and implausible. Wasted good actors.
